ARV’s are crucial to tackling HIV

We are fortunate to have dedicated and compassionate staff members like Bainatu, a counselor who goes above and beyond to support her clients. A recent experience in Songani village illustrates her exceptional commitment to her work.

Mr and Mrs ‘A’ (we are protecting their identity), a couple in Songani village were struggling to come to terms with the husband's HIV diagnosis. After being tested at our Centre, Songani, the husband was hesitant to share the news with his wife, fearing her reaction. Bainatu (photo), with her expertise and empathy, devised a plan to help the couple navigate this challenging situation. She advised the husband to come together with the wife and start a fresh process. She tested both the husband and wife, and then presented the results in a way that made it easier for the wife to accept the news.

However, the couple faced another hurdle: being a reputed and high status family, they were too ashamed to collect their medication from the hospital, fearing stigma and judgment from their community. Bainatu took it upon herself to collect the medication on their behalf, using her own resources and traveling a significant distance to the hospital. When we say ‘medication’, we mean the life saving and vital provision of anti-retro viral drugs (ARV’s) that suppress the HIV virus.

Bainatu said; "I will help this couple until they fully accept their situation and are able to collect the medication on their own". I provide counselling and help any client who is struggling with this situation without expecting anything in return, she continued.

Bainatu's support doesn't stop there. Whenever we conduct outreach testing and someone is found to be HIV-positive, she ensures that the client is connected to the relevant government services and receives the necessary medication. She bridges the gap between diagnosis and treatment, providing a vital lifeline to those who need it most.

This act demonstrates Bainatu's dedication to her clients' well-being. Her actions not only alleviated the couple's immediate concerns but also sent a powerful message about the importance of compassion, empathy, and confidentiality in counseling.
