Ruth and Nina teaching the girls how to operate the treadle sewing machine.

Friday 19th March marked the start of the new Sanitary workshop for girls at the Songani Centre.

The workshop will run every Friday, with each girl learning how to use a treadle sewing machine before making their own re-usable, washable sanitary pad.

The workshop aims to provide each girl with a sanitary pad and underwear whilst educating them in good sexual health, encouraging them to come back to the centre for any future help and guidance. This is a fantastic opportunity for our centre staff to build a rapport with the girls in the local community.

With thanks to Ruth , our textile projects co-ordinator, the girls had a lot of fun mastering the art of the treadle sewing machine and are now ready to begin sewing during next weeks workshop.

For the last few weeks, Abi Watson has been running activities (cheerleading and sewing) at the centre to encourage girls to attend and engage with Angella (centre manager) and Bainatu (HIV Counsellor).
