Tree success in Majiya village
While developing countries like Malawi are not the main contributors to climate change, they are adversely impacted by it and least able to deal with its effects on their social, economic and natural systems.
Malawi is heading toward environmental unsustainability and according to a research paper (2013), at current rates of deforestation Malawi, will be without trees by 2033. So Malawi needs trees!
Our tree planting projects gives you the chance to offset your carbon footprint while combating the problem of deforestation in Malawi. The villages we work with pick the different types of tree they would like, before growing them themselves, from seed. We support them every step of the way.
Majiya is one of the most hardworking and well-coordinated villages in our tree project. To ensure the success of the project in their village, they have created a supervision timetable, ensuring that their seedlings are checked at least twice a week by teams of villagers. We observed that they had even taken measures to safeguard the saplings, building shelters to protect them from the heavy Malawian rain.
With some of their saplings ready to be planted out into their tree nursery, our project manager Nina arranged training from a member of FRIM (Forestry Research Institute of Malawi). She taught them best practice for planting the seedlings in their tree nurseries, to ensure they have the greatest chance of survival.
Plans are being made so that other villages can learn from the successes of Majiya village.
