Hope Ambassadors lead the way

The Mbedza Youth Leadership Award Scheme has made great progress this year as students contribute to Mbedza’s work with various acts of service in the community.

Theatre training at the Songani site

Students have been receiving training in theatre for development and have put this training into great effect through various outreach events in the community. The training included the principles of participatory drama as a tool for social change, script development and exploring local issues. The training strengthened teamwork, boosted leadership qualities, and laid the groundwork for future community outreach efforts through theatre.

The Mbedza Hope Ambassadors have hosted other youth groups in a series of friendly football and netball matches promoting youth engagement, teamwork and community spirit. These events are often opportunities for our HIV counsellors to offer HIV testing and confidential counselling services to players and attendees. In August one of these events saw 30 people tested and one HIV positive case - finding positive cases is crucial in the fight against HIV.

Mbedza’s Hope Ambassadors are key to our health strategy working closely with our HIV outreach programme and the sanitary kit programme. We are especially grateful to Hilden Charitable Trust who as part of a grant gave us funds that will enable the Hope Ambassadors to perform educational drama exploring relevant sex and relationship issues.

A final big shout and thank you to our friends at Manor CE Academy in York who completed a live below line fundraising event to support this programme.
